The Mid-Con Sprint: Pacing, Local Coffee, and Hot Picks for Friday at GenCon

By Friday morning, the whole vibe at GenCon changes. The Thursday crowd is one thing, but once Friday hits, the true weekend floodgates open. If you’re staying through Sunday, this is where pacing yourself actually matters.

The biggest mistake you can make right now is burning through your energy reserves before Saturday even arrives. Pacing is everything. To make it through Sunday without completely crashing, you need a strategy that balances floor time with actual rest, and smart scheduling.

Here is your guide to mastering the mid-con sprint, resetting your mind offsite, and hitting the absolute best games and panels on the schedule:

Pro Tip: Escape the Floor and Find Real Coffee

When you are surrounded by tens of thousands of gamers, sensory overload accumulates fast. To keep your sanity intact, you’ve got to step away from the convention hall for a bit. I personally am a fan of finding a good local coffee whenever I am in a new city.

Instead of waiting in a massive line for mediocre convention hall coffee, take a short walk downtown to get some fresh air and support local Indianapolis spots. If you need a quality caffeine fix and a moment of peace, keep these local recommendations on your radar:

  • Georgia Street Grind: Perfect for a quick, high-quality espresso right near the action.
  • Red Door Cafe: A great, quiet spot to recharge away from the noisy corridors.
  • Mocha House: Excellent drinks and a cozy atmosphere to sit down for twenty minutes.
  • Square Cat Vinyl (Personal Favorite): Located a short trip over in Fountain Square, this place is a record store with a full coffee bar inside. The music vibe, great coffee, and distance from the convention center make it the ultimate mental reset.

Getting offsite for 30 minutes just to sit down with a real cup of coffee will give your brain the reset it desperately needs.

Games to Keep on Your Radar

Once you’re re-caffeinated, heading back to the floor can feel overwhelming with so many options. Here are a few games that should definitely be on your radar:

  • Class of '89: You cannot buy this one for retail just yet, but the development team is running demonstrations. Seek out a demo table to catch an early look at what makes this title so exciting.
  • Orloj: Recently released to retail, this clockwork-themed title is well worth sitting down to demo or picking up for your home group.
  • The Old King's Crown & Moytura: Neither of these are brand new releases, but both have built tremendous momentum over the past few months. If you missed their initial launches, seek them out on the floor.
  • Kokeshi: Available since late last year, this title is still getting a lot of love for its gorgeous art and tight gameplay.

If you are looking for the titles getting a ton of buzz across the floor today, keep an eye out for Drillers, Night at the Zoo, Game Makers, Entropy, and Containers. With the exception of Containers (which has been around for a bit), these are fresh titles catching everyone's attention right now.

Must-See Panels: Daggerheart and Collaborative Storytelling

If your feet are killing you and you need a break, ducking into a seminar hall is the best move you can make. Personally, I am crazy for Daggerheart at the moment (my Hope & Fear expansion literally arrived on my doorstep this week), so if I were walking the floor in Indy today, these are the exact panels you would find me at:

  • Daggerheart Next: Showcase & Live Demo of Hope & Fear Expansion: The Darrington Press development team is giving an inside look at upcoming features, capped off with a live actual play session demonstrating the new mechanics in real time.
  • The Art of Daggerheart: A dedicated behind-the-scenes look at the visual production, original sketches, and artistic direction that brought this system to life.
  • Collaborative Worldbuilding in TTRPGs: An awesome panel where experienced creators share real, practical tips on how to get your players actively building the world with you.

The Vendor Strategy: Managing the Friday Surge

If you are running an indie booth on Friday, the demographic on the floor changes dramatically. Thursday is usually full of hardcore collectors moving fast, but Friday brings in regional weekend attendees, casual players, and families looking for accessible fun.

To keep your team sane during peak Friday hours:

  • Rotate for Offsite Breaks: Make sure your booth crew gets to take turns slipping away to grab a real coffee at one of the spots mentioned above. A booth worker who just got a 20-minute breather and a real coffee is going to give a much better pitch than someone who's been standing on concrete for six hours straight.
  • Pace Your Demos: Keep your game demos punchy and focused on the core hook. Getting players excited quickly keeps table rotation fluid and reduces long wait times at your booth.
  • Have Fun: This is go time for your business but also kind of Christmas and your birthday all in one. Enjoy the ride!

Wait, we have more!

Just wrapped up an incredible first day at Gen Con 2025! After an 8-hour road trip, I dove headfirst into the action. I explored the massive exhibit hall for hours, discovered the amazing (and potentially expensive) world of Kingdom Death, and hunted down some great new games for the family. I even managed to catch up with the crew from Cuse Con! The day was capped off with the unbelievable Critical Role live show. This post explores the classic "good vs. evil" dynamic and its role in TTRPGs through the character alignment system. We delve into the pros and cons of both strict and flexible approaches to alignment, examining how each method impacts character development, player agency, and overall storytelling.
